The Carnival Sunrise is a Sunshine-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Originally launched in 1999 as the Carnival Triumph, the vessel underwent a massive $200 million bow-to-stern transformation in 2019, completely modernizing its amenities, dining venues, and staterooms before being renamed. The "Poop Cruise" refers to the infamous February 2013 maritime disaster aboard the Carnival Triumph cruise ship.On February 10, 2013, an engine room fire broke out while the ship was returning to Texas from Mexico. While no one was injured in the blaze, it knocked out the ship's main power and propulsion, leaving more than 4,000 passengers and crew stranded in the Gulf of Mexico.Without electricity, the ship's sanitary systems completely failed, earning the voyage its gross nickname due to the following conditions:No Flushing Toilets: Plumbing ceased to work, causing raw sewage to back up into passenger cabins and drip down the hallway walls.Biohazard Bags: Passengers were forced to defecate into red biohazard bags and urinate in showers or over the side of the ship."Tent City": The lack of air conditioning made the interior cabins sweltering and completely unbreathable.
