Galápagos sea lions can be incredibly comfortable around people. They sleep on benches, climb steps, occupy docks and even get into boats, often behaving as though humans are simply part of the scenery. That lack of fear is something that needs to be protected. Sea lions shouldn’t be touched, fed or encouraged into close contact, both to preserve their natural behaviour and to reduce the risk of disease transmission. The species is also classified as endangered, with its population having declined substantially in recent decades. ________________________________________________________________________________ Planning a trip to the Galápagos Islands? 🏝️ Paul McFarling is a Galápagos guide and tour organiser with over 30 years of experience helping travellers explore the islands, wildlife, landscapes, and natural history of this extraordinary destination.
