What Pride of Maui's Molokini Snorkel Tour Looks Like
The Pride of Maui is our large catamaran, built for stability and space on a five-hour morning snorkel tour to Molokini Crater and a second coastal reef. It's the boat we point people toward when the group has a wide range of ages and comfort levels. Departure is 8 am from the North Dock at Māʻalaea Harbor. There's 3,000 square feet of open deck across two levels, and passenger counts are capped well below the boat's maximum, so there's room to stretch out in the sun or stay in the shade. Breakfast comes out early, and the crew fits your snorkel gear on the way to the first stop, including an optional wetsuit top for warmth, buoyancy, and sun protection. Weather permitting, the first stop is inside Molokini Crater, where morning conditions can offer some of the clearest water anywhere on the island. Before anyone gets in, the Captain runs a snorkel class on the upper deck. It's built for first-timers, but it's also a useful gear check for people who've done this before. Two ocean-level stairways and wide swim steps make getting in easier than most people expect, and there's flotation for anyone who wants it. There's also a waterslide off the bow, which is the part kids remember, and a swim ladder right there to climb back up and go again. If you'd rather go below the surface, SNUBA is available on board. You breathe through a hose connected to a surface raft, and no certification is required. The second stop depends on the day. Turtle Town, Coral Gardens, and Olowalu are all in rotation, and the captain picks based on what the ocean is actually doing. The run takes about an hour, during which the crew fires up the grill for a BBQ lunch. Hawaiian green sea turtles turn up often at the second site, though never on schedule. After the last swim, there are warm freshwater showers, a cold local beer or a Mai Tai, and a freshly baked cookie for the cruise back to the harbor. Pride of Maui suits multi-generational families, first-time snorkelers, and groups who want a social day with plenty to do.
