Carnival Luminosa’s Foghorn in the North Pacific Ocean 🛳️
Crossing the North Pacific between Japan and Alaska wasn't all blue skies. For several of our seven consecutive sea days (technically eight thanks to crossing the International Date Line), we travelled through heavy fog, with visibility and weather so poor that the upper outdoor decks were closed for safety. Every two minutes, the ship's foghorn sounded to alert other vessels of our position. Even from our cabin on Deck 6 it became part of the soundtrack of our day—I can only imagine how loud it would have been on the higher decks. Add in a one-hour time change almost every day as we adjusted to Alaska time, and we spent the crossing in a constant state of mild jet lag! It wasn't the kind of cruising you see in the brochures, but it was a fascinating experience and a reminder that the ocean always has the final say.
