Home Cooking in The Gambia | Local Market & Family Lunch in Banjul
We experience Gambian home cooking during a visit to the home of Sheriff and his wife, Kaddy, near Banjul, The Gambia. This authentic cultural experience begins with a trip to a local market to shop for fresh vegetables, fish, spices, and meat, followed by hands-on cooking in a family compound. After changing into traditional Gambian clothing, we help prepare lunch outdoors using charcoal stoves — grinding spices, prepping vegetables, frying local fish, and cooking rice and a rich meat stew. Cooking and food are a universal language, and spending the day with a local family offers a meaningful way to understand daily life in The Gambia. This visit took place on March 29, 2023, during Ramadan. Although our hosts could not join us in eating, their warmth, generosity, and hospitality made this one of the highlights of our time ashore. ⭐ Gambian Home Cooking Tour This experience was organized by Black & White Safari, a locally based tour company in The Gambia run by Amadou Jobarteh (Armstrong). We first took this tour in 2018 and were excited to return again. 🔗 Tour details: https://blackandwhitesafari.com/tours-and-trips/gambian-home-cooking-experience 📝 Read the Full Blog Post You can read the full write-up of our day, including more photos and details, on The Inside Cabin here: https://blackandwhitesafari.com/tours-and-trips/gambian-home-cooking-experience 📍 Location: Banjul, The Gambia 🍲 Experience: Gambian Home Cooking & Local Market Visit 🚢 Filmed during: Our World Cruise aboard Holland America 🔔 Subscribe to The Inside Cabin for travel, food, and cultural experiences from around the world.
