I bought this Mobility Scooter off Facebook marketplace cheap after buying My Disabled Mum a brand new Mobility Scooter, Due to her having a Spinal and ankle fusion after a Work related accident. I bought it purely as a fun project to allow Me to scoot around with Mum legally, Because at the time of this Video (January 2025) Personal e-Scooters are still “illegal” to use on public roads and footpaths in NSW. With some fines being around $750. So I will be able to comfortably scoot along with My Disabled Mum, When We go away to scoot around Sydney and on Cruises etc. I won’t go into details but the seller was a bit deceptive during the sale, It wasn’t 18 months old and low use as claimed. It’s a 2019 model so 5+ years old at the time of purchase and it ran but needed work. It had a chipped tooth in one drive gear and a replacement transaxle from Active scooters was $200 plus $50 postage. A replacement transaxle and upgraded 350w motor was only $189 on eBay. So the original 250 watt 7kph transaxle was replaced with a 350 watt 8kph unit, Immediately it was night and day it was like riding a new mobility scooter. The only downside was the cables on the motor were reversed, As hooked Red positive to red Positive black negative to black negative using the original scooter plugs for the motor. Upon pressing forward on the handlebars it went backwards (right hand lever forwards). Then left hand which is normally reverse was forward. So the cables were switch so it was Motor Black negative to Scooter red positive. Motor Red positive to Scooter black negative Instead of Motor red positive to Scooter Red positive Motor black negative to scooter black negative In order to get the correct polarity for the handlebar controls to work as they originally did, A minor inconvenience but easily fixed while I was wiring the new motor to the original scooter plugs and wiring anyway. Which still allows it to split into 5 pieces for travel. Given the Mobility scooter is a 2019 model so 6 years old and still has the original 2x 12 volt 12 amp hour batteries. The next job is to upgrade it to 2x 12 volt 35 amp hour lithium batteries, Which should hopefully see the range go from 20 to 40km. By no means am I going to go crazy with it, The aim is to keep it “Legal” to use as a mobility Scooter so it’s a fun toy for myself while being a useful tool. With a few subtle upgrades both to the drive train and externally. That way I can happily cruise along with My Disabled Mum in comfort, While still being able to take both Mobility Scooters on Trains, Trams, Ferries, Cruises etc. They are also a great form of transport for the short hop to the shops, To do the 1km each way.
