We almost missed the best sunset in the Smokies… 🌄🐻 When we drove up to Kuwohi Observation Tower, the entire mountain was covered in a massive cloud. We could barely see anything and honestly thought the sunset was going to be a complete disappointment. Then, just minutes before sunset, the clouds suddenly broke apart and revealed one of the most incredible views we’ve ever seen in the Smoky Mountains. 🤯 But the surprises weren’t over. On the walk to the observation tower, we spotted a mama bear and her two cubs just a few feet off the trail—the closest we’ve ever been to a bear in the wild. It was equal parts amazing and terrifying. 🐻🐻🐻 If you want to visit Kuwohi yourself, here’s what you need to know: 📍 The parking area is located at the end of Kuwohi Road inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 🥾 From the parking lot, it’s about a 0.5-mile paved trail to the observation tower (1 mile round-trip). ⛰️ At 6,643 feet, Kuwohi is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains and the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. 🌅 Sunrise and sunset are both incredible, but sunset is especially magical when the clouds cooperate. 🚗 Arrive at least 45–60 minutes before sunset to find parking and make the walk to the top. 👟 The trail is short but steep, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket—even in summer, temperatures can be much cooler at the summit.
