Favourite ships by Type in alphabetical order: Aircraft Carrier: Admiral Kuznetsov Reason: Not a big fan of aircraft carriers & this 1 is an embarrassment it’s hard not to laugh at it. Fate: Removed from active service in March 2017. Battleship: IJN Yamato Reason: It’s the biggest battleship in history! Fate: Sunk by American planes during Operation Ten-Go on 7 April 1945. Bulk Carrier: SS Edmund Fitzgerald Reason: It’s the most popular wreck in Lake Superior & Gordon Lightfoot wrote an awesome song about it. Fate: Lost with all hands (29 crew) in a storm on 10 November 1975. Cruise Ship: Pacific Encounter/Carnival Encounter Reason: This is what all cruise ships should look like, made a model of it made out of cereal boxes & milk bottles when I was a kid & I went on a cruise on this ship in late 2024 for my 30th birthday. Fate: Still in service as of 2026. Cruiser: HMAS Canberra Reason: I like the look of it. Fate: Scuttled after heavy damage off Savo Island on 9 August 1942. Destroyer: USS Kidd Reason: It was used to film “Greyhound”. Fate: Preserved as museum ship. Dreadnought: HMS Dreadnought Reason: Only battleship in the world to sink a submarine. Fate: Sold for scrap on 9 May 1921. Fishing Ship: FV Northwestern Reason: Favourite boat from “The Deadliest Catch” & I’m a fan of Sig Hansen. Fate: Still in service as of 2026. Hospital Ship: USNS Mercy Reason: It’s interesting how an oil tanker was converted into a hospital ship. Fate: Still in service as of 2026. Ironclad: USS Merrimack/CSS Virginia Reason: I like the way it looks even though it’s slow, has a deep draft & takes forever to turn. Fate: Scuttled on May 11, 1862 later salvaged & scrapped. Lightship: US lightship LV-117 Reason: It was accidentally sunk by the Olympic. Fate: Sunk in collision with RMS Olympic on 15 May 1934. Minesweeper: HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen Reason: Incredible story in WW2 when the crew disguised the ship as a tropical island to escape the Japanese navy. Fate: Preserved as museum ship. Ocean Liner: RMS Lusitania Reason: I prefer size & speed over size & luxury. Fate: Torpedoed & sunk on 7 May 1915. Oil Tanker: MV San Demetrio Reason: Incredible story of the crew returning to the ship after an enemy attack & sailed the damaged ship to its destination. Fate: Sunk on 17 March 1942. Paddle Steamer: SS Great Eastern Reason: Biggest ship of the 19th century. Fate: Scrapped in 1889–90. Pre-dreadnought: IJN Mikasa Reason: The ship was almost completely destroyed twice but the people refused to let her die. Fate: Preserved as museum ship. Research Ship: RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh Reason: The support vessel of the Mir submersibles & appeared in “Titanic”, “Ghosts of the Abyss” & “Expedition: Bismarck”. Fate: Still in service as of 2026. Submarine: Dmitry Donskoy Reason: Largest submarine in the world. Fate: Awaiting conversion into a museum ship as of 2026. Troopship/Tracking ship: USS General Harry Taylor/USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg Reason: Appears in the movie “Virus” & was sunk as an artificial reef. Fate: Sunk as an artificial reef on 27 May 2009. Tugboat: Point Halifax Reason: It’s design & physical appearance is used for the character Emily from “Theodore Tugboat”. Fate: Sold, renamed to Leonard M. @ the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
