We May Stop Buying Travel Medical Insurance. Here's Why
We May Stop Buying Travel Medical Insurance. Here’s Why This is a video I never really expected to make. My wife and I have always bought travel medical insurance. But after going through the process again last October, we started asking ourselves a very uncomfortable question: does buying travel medical insurance still make sense for us? As you get older, travel medical insurance can become dramatically more expensive, particularly when pre-existing medical conditions enter the picture. And the rules surrounding medical stability, medication changes and claims can be surprisingly complicated. But there's another side to the equation that we hadn't really considered before. We're Canadian, and while we have excellent healthcare, we also have some very long wait times for certain types of medical care. If we became ill or injured while travelling in Europe, would being repatriated to Canada necessarily be the best option? We've also experienced firsthand that medical care in parts of Europe can be surprisingly affordable. I'll tell you the story of a €117 broken arm in France, and why that experience changed the way we think about medical costs while travelling. I'm not suggesting that everyone should stop buying travel medical insurance. Quite the opposite — this is about how we're thinking through the risk for ourselves. Maybe the answer is insurance. Maybe the answer is self-insurance. Maybe it's choosing our travel destinations more carefully. Or maybe we're just crazy. 😂 If you're an older Canadian who travels or cruises, I'd really like to hear how you approach travel medical insurance.
