Fish make up most of a Galápagos sea lion’s diet, but they’re far more flexible hunters than you might expect. Different colonies and even individual sea lions can specialise in different prey, including sardines, reef fish and deepwater species, with small amounts of squid, rays and even sharks also recorded. Their whiskers, known as vibrissae, are another important hunting adaptation. They’re extremely sensitive to movement and disturbances in the water, helping sea lions track prey while using their speed, agility and manoeuvrability to hunt underwater. ________________________________________________________________________________ Planning a trip to the Galápagos Islands? 🏝️ Paul McFarling is a Galápagos guide and tour organiser with over 30 years of experience helping travellers explore the islands, wildlife, landscapes, and natural history of this extraordinary destination.
