How does a state-of-the-art luxury cruise ship with multiple redundant engines completely lose power in the middle of a raging storm? In March 2019, the Viking Sky was caught in severe weather off the coast of Norway when it suddenly suffered a total blackout, coming within a single ship's length of crashing into the rocky shoreline. The cause wasn't a fire or a massive mechanical explosion. Because the ship was violently pitching and rolling in the waves, the oil pumps in the engines sucked up air instead of oil. The ship's automated safety systems sensed the low oil pressure and immediately shut down all operating engines to "protect" them—leaving the ship completely paralyzed. This terrifying near-disaster, which required hundreds of passengers to be airlifted by helicopter, forced the maritime industry to re-evaluate engine designs, oil tank regulations, and emergency alarm management forever. ▶️ Watch the full video on my channel to discover how 7 major disasters changed cruising forever! #shorts #vikingsky #cruiseship #engineering #maritimehistory #disaster #cruisecrash #cruiseyseadays
