Situated on a 2,500acre-site on the western side of Southampton Water, it is owned and operated by Esso Petroleum, a subsidiary of US-based ExxonMobil. Opened by Clement Attlee on the 14 th of September 1951, the Refinery now processes 330,000 barrels of crude oil a day, accounting for approximately 20% of the UK’s total refining capacity. It is also home to the largest refrigerated LPG storage facility in Northern Europe. The Refinery's marine terminal handles around 2,000 ship movements and 22 million tonnes of crude oil and other products every year. The Fawley site processes more than 20 different types of crude oil, including liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), petrol, jet fuel, diesel, marine fuels, heating oil, lubricants, and fuel oil. The Refinery also supplies heavy naphtha and gas oil feedstock to the adjacent petrochemical facility for the production of different chemical products. The petrochemical complex annually produces approximately 750,000t of chemical products including ethylene, propene and butane, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), halobutyl rubbers, lubricating base oils, specialty chemicals, and additives. Approximately 85% of the Refinery products are transported through a network of approximately 700km of underground pipelines. They connect five distribution terminals as well as the facilities at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Birmingham airports. The remaining Refinery products are transported by sea to coastal distribution terminals. ExxonMobil serves approximately 800,000 UK customers a day through its retail network of approximately 1,100 Esso-branded service stations in the country. As safety devices, Fawley Refinery operates 4 flare stacks. They are used during unit- shutdowns and unit-startups, as well as to burn off gases when there is an operational disruption. 3 of the flare stacks are on the petroleum site of the Refinery and the 4th flare stack is a dedicated flare stack for the chemical plant. At the moment there is a major expansion going on in Fawley called FAST (FAwley STrategy). A new hydrogen plant is being build, which will help to increase low-sulphur diesel production by 40% (38,000 barrels per day). The hydrogen plant is expected to achieve full production in 2025, and is set to be part of the Solent cluster, a collaborative effort among companies focused on decarbonizing the industry. Currently, about 2,500 people are employed at Fawley.
