Exploring Quail Island, Ship Graveyard. (Explore the fascinating ship graveyard of Ōtamahua / Quail Island Historic Area in Lyttelton Harbour / Whakaraupō. Hidden along the island’s western shoreline are the exposed remains of historic vessels including the Darra, Frank Guy, and Mullogh, slowly rusting away in the tidal mudflats. These abandoned hulls and scattered debris offer a rare glimpse into Canterbury’s maritime past and create one of the most unique historic sites in the harbour. The best time to visit the shipwrecks is at low tide, when the remains are fully exposed. At high tide, much of the graveyard disappears beneath the water. Visitors can reach the island via the daily Black Cat Cruises ferry from Lyttelton Wharf, with the crossing taking around 10–15 minutes. The ship graveyard is accessible along the 4.5 km Ōtamahua / Quail Island Loop Track, a scenic walk that takes approximately 2–3 hours to complete while exploring the island’s historic ruins, harbour views, and walking trails.)
