Is removing automatic cruise gratuities awkward? In our experience, not at all. We generally visit Guest Services early in the cruise. There is usually someone assigned to handle gratuity requests, and we have never been judged, pressured, or made to feel uncomfortable. We choose to remove the automatic gratuities because we prefer tipping our room steward, dining staff, bartenders, and other helpful crew members directly in cash. This is our personal preference—not a suggestion that people avoid tipping. Procedures may vary by ship and sailing.
