Five days. Miles of open water. Relentless rain. Long portages. And one brutal 14-hour final push. This was our canoe expedition through the Scottish Highlands, travelling through Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and the full length of Loch Ness. We spent days living from the boats, setting up camp each night and getting back on the water every morning no matter what the weather threw at us. Day 4 was one of the toughest, with around 12 miles of paddling through horrendous rain before finally getting camp set up. Then came Fort Augustus. After moving the canoes across the portage and grabbing a well-earned bacon butty, we prepared for the biggest section of the expedition. The final push was huge. We paddled the last couple of miles of Loch Oich, crossed the entire length of Loch Ness and then continued along the canal towards the Jacobite Loch Ness Cruises car park. We eventually arrived in darkness. 🛶 Over 30 miles on the final day ⏱️ Around 14 hours of paddling 🏕️ Five days on expedition 🌧️ Scottish Highland weather 💪 One serious test of endurance It wasn’t about speed. It was about keeping the boats moving when we were wet, tired and knew there were still hours of paddling ahead. That’s what expeditions are really about.
