Galápagos Land Iguanas: The Species Accidentally Saved From Extinction
Galápagos land iguanas are some of the most striking reptiles in the islands, and they’re found nowhere else on Earth. In this video, I explore how they evolved from a common ancestor shared with marine iguanas, how isolation shaped different populations, and how they adapted to survive in the dry and unpredictable Galápagos environment. I’ll also look at some of their more unusual behaviour, from their attraction to yellow flowers and surprising bursts of speed to the way they regulate their body temperature and survive periods of drought and food scarcity. We’ll see how adult males develop their spectacular yellow and orange colouring, how they compete for territories and mates, and why young iguanas are so rarely seen. I also explore one of the most remarkable conservation stories in the Galápagos. A group of land iguanas moved to North Seymour in 1937 ended up preserving a population that later disappeared from its original island, and their descendants were eventually used to help restore iguanas to areas where they had been lost.
