When people think of Charles Darwin in the Galápagos, they often imagine him studying finches and suddenly discovering evolution. That famous story is much simpler than what actually happened. In this video, I look at what Darwin really saw during his visit in 1835, the animals that caught his attention, the mistake he made when collecting finches, and why the mockingbirds and giant tortoises may have been far more important to his thinking at the time. I’ll follow what happened after Darwin returned to Britain, when specialists including John Gould began examining his specimens and revealed connections Darwin himself had not fully recognised in the islands. From there, I explain how Darwin began thinking about species as branches of a shared tree of life, how reading Thomas Malthus helped him arrive at natural selection, and why Alfred Russel Wallace eventually pushed him towards publishing On the Origin of Species. I also explore why Darwin’s ideas changed far more than our understanding of Galápagos wildlife. Natural selection provided a mechanism that could connect fossils, anatomy, behaviour and the geographical distribution of species through common ancestry. The Galápagos did not simply hand Darwin the theory of evolution — they gave him observations and unanswered questions that helped lead him towards a completely new way of understanding life on Earth. ________________________________________________________________________________ Planning a trip to the Galápagos Islands? 🏝️ Paul McFarling is a Galápagos guide and tour organiser with over 30 years of experience helping travellers explore the islands, wildlife, landscapes, and natural history of this extraordinary destination.
