Disney Built a Mech Suit and Nobody Noticed

These massive puppets are larger than life: up to 13 feet tall, 120 lbs. But the performer doesn't feel that weight. How did Disney do that? Disney invited me on board the Destiny, where I talked to Imagineering and Disney Live Entertainment to find out how this tech works. It's called Exoframe, and what I learned is that Disney didn't just make a bigger puppet. They made an entire character tech platform. Disney's exoframe technology is a wearable exoskeleton that lets performers bring giant characters to life — characters too big for traditional costumes, too theatrical for robotics. It debuted with the Hulk at Avengers Campus at California Adventure in 2022, then went silent for three years. Now it's powering the 9-foot Rock Titan and the 13-foot Ice Titan in the Hercules show on the Disney Destiny. When combined with Disney's recent innovations in robotics, exoframe represents the other half of Disney's future character technology. I got to see the Titans up close at a media preview with Jeff Conover, Creative Director for Puppetry and Articulation at Walt Disney Imagineering, and Michael Serna, Executive Creative Director at Disney Live Entertainment. They walked me through how the exoskeleton transfers 120 pounds of puppet weight to the deck instead of the performer, how pneumatic-assisted joints augment the performer's strength, and what they learned from the Titans and the Hulk. This isn't just a cruise ship story.
