This video explains the real downsides of living on a cruise ship full-time, set against the genuine upsides, and what a year at sea really costs compared with assisted living. It is built on the cruise lines' own published wording (Royal Caribbean, Holland America), Cruise Critic's guide to living aboard, a 2004 Northwestern University study by Dr Lee Lindquist, the 2024 Genworth and CareScout Cost of Care Survey, and documented cases: Mario Salcedo, Lee "Mama Lee" Wachtstetter, Morton Jablin, the cancelled Life at Sea cruise and the delayed Villa Vie Odyssey. Prices and policies were checked in October 2026 and can change, so check with your cruise line before you book. What's covered in this video: • The space: standard inside cabins start at about 185 square feet on Carnival, and some Royal Caribbean interiors are about 166. • Guarantee bookings: Royal Caribbean allocates the exact cabin and its location, which can mean an obstructed view. • Changeover day: back-to-back guarantee bookings can mean moving between staterooms, plus turnaround-day immigration. • The food: meals are paid for, but rich cuisine and desserts are plentiful, so long-term residents set their own rules. • Loneliness: CLIA puts the average cruise at about a week, so the people around you change every week. • Wi-Fi: onboard one-device packages reported at about $33 a night in 2026, more than $12,000 over a year. • A life on land: a land address for government and health benefits, mail forwarding, and pets (Queen Mary 2's kennels are the exception). • Medicine: Holland America says its onboard formulary is limited and it cannot special order medication. • The medical centre: Royal Caribbean describes "limited professional medical services" and moves serious cases to a shoreside facility. • Plans that sink: the Life at Sea three-year cruise was cancelled in November 2023; the Villa Vie Odyssey spent about four months in Belfast. • The cost: about $72,093 a year in an inside cabin (Salcedo, 2019) against a 2024 assisted living median of $70,800, and what the Northwestern study actually assumed. • Who it suits, and testing it first with a long voyage or a world cruise segment. Common questions answered: How much does it cost to live on a cruise ship? Mario Salcedo said about $72,093 a year in an inside cabin in 2019, and about $101,258 with a balcony. Is living on a cruise ship cheaper than assisted living? A 2004 Northwestern study estimated about $230,000 against $228,000 over 20 years, but the ship offers limited medical services, not care. Can you get prescriptions refilled on a cruise ship? Holland America says its formulary is limited and it is unable to special order medication. Mentioned in this video: Mario Salcedo, Royal Caribbean, Explorer of the Seas, Carnival, Holland America, Cruise Critic, CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association), Royal Caribbean Blog, Cunard Queen Mary 2, Regent Seven Seas Navigator, Morton Jablin, Lee "Mama Lee" Wachtstetter, Crystal Serenity, Life at Sea, Villa Vie Odyssey, Belfast, Istanbul, Royal Caribbean Ultimate World Cruise, Northwestern University, Dr Lee Lindquist, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Genworth, CareScout, assisted living. The money can add up. What it buys is a holiday that doesn't end, not care. Would you live at sea, or is a few weeks plenty? Tell us in the comments.
