Totem anyone? Is this the making of a totem or another woodwork?

While walking in Juneau, I had the privilege of seeing this Craftsman craft and chisel away at what I believe to be a totem. I might be incorrect, but I hope this trade will continue for many generations to come. Great craftsmanship.
