This video walks through one full sea day of retired life on a cruise ship, hour by hour, and then adds up what living aboard for a year really costs, using published prices and documented cases. A small number of retirees live on cruise ships full time. Mario Salcedo has lived mostly on Royal Caribbean ships for more than 25 years and sailed his 1,000th cruise from Miami in January 2025. Lee Wachtstetter lived aboard Holland America's Prinsendam and then Crystal Serenity, and in 2015 put her year at about $164,000. A 2004 Northwestern University study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found cruise-ship living cost about the same as assisted living over 20 years. What's covered in this video: • Cabin size and what fits in it, including a 156-square-foot inside cabin on Star of the Seas. • Solo travel: single supplements of up to double the fare, and solo cabins on Norwegian, Cunard and Celebrity. • The 2004 Lindquist study: about $230,000 on a ship vs $228,000 in assisted living. • Laundry by line: Princess launderettes, free launderettes on Cunard and Viking, about $35 wash-and-fold on Royal Caribbean. • Princess Captain's Circle Elite (15 cruises or 150 cruise days): complimentary laundry and afternoon tea. • Wi-fi at sea: Princess MedallionNet at $27.99 to $33.99 a day from October 2026, over $10,000 a year. • Casino offers, back-to-back sailings and loyalty offers, and why they can change. • Health care on board, Medicare's six-hour rule and Part D prescriptions bought at sea. • Repetition, routine and moving around the fleet; the land admin that still needs an address. • Four real yearly costs: Villa Vie Odyssey rent-to-own (from $3,499 a month), Royal Caribbean's 274-night Ultimate World Cruise (from about $60,000), Salcedo's $101,000 and Wachtstetter's $164,000. • Today's assisted-living median ($70,800 in 2024) and $18-a-day gratuities on top. Common questions answered: Can you retire on a cruise ship? Yes, a small number of people do, but it costs far more than the old 2004 estimate. How much does it cost to live on a cruise ship for a year? From about $42,000 per person on a residential ship to $100,000 or more on mainstream and luxury lines. Does Medicare cover you on a cruise ship? Generally only in a US port or within six hours of one; check with your insurer. Mentioned in this video: Mario Salcedo, Lee Wachtstetter, Lee Lindquist (Northwestern University), Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Royal Caribbean, Star of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Ultimate World Cruise, Serenade of the Seas, Holland America Prinsendam, Crystal Serenity, Princess Cruises, Captain's Circle, MedallionNet, Cunard, Viking, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Villa Vie Residences, Villa Vie Odyssey, Genworth, CareScout, Medicare, Kiplinger, Cruise Critic. Retired life at sea is real and lovely in the ways its residents describe, and it is not the cheap retirement hack the internet promises.
