Knowing how backed up the Fira cable cars get on high-density days, I opted for a official ship shore excursion to secure priority tendering to Athinios Port rather than the main dock below Fira. Perivolos Beach Break (Expectation vs. Reality): I booked a beach break excursion to Perivolos—one of Santorini’s famous long black sand beaches. The trip featured a nailbiting, narrow switchback bus ride up the cliffs (hats off to Greek bus drivers!). However, the excursion fell short of expectations. Promised as an excursion package, it turned out to just be a glorified transfer with a bottle of water. To top it off, as a solo traveler, I was charged €10 for a single lounger, while couples next to me paid €5 each! On the plus side, Perivolos has great local facilities, including a well-stocked mini-market right by the bus stop and plenty of seaside dining. The Cable Car Bottleneck & The Return Journey: After the beach, the bus brought us to Fira. Surprised by how many fellow cruisers didn't realise they had to take the cable car back down to the Old Port to catch the tender, I ditched the guided tour to wander Fira on my own. The real challenge hit at 2:30 PM: a massive 2-hour queue just to get on the cable car. Between the long wait times, line-jumpers, and a second queue for the tender boat at the bottom dock, the logistics ate up a massive portion of the day. My Final Verdict on Santorini: Thanks to NCL's Free at Sea $50 shore excursion credit, this tour only cost me an extra $7—making it a cheap way to get priority off the ship. However, having visited Oia and Fira before, I honestly think I would stay on the ship next time. The endless queues take away so much of the magic.
