I nearly gave away $200 worth of beer, wine, and champagne to my own friends, in my own cabin, and didn't even realize I was doing anything wrong until I was stopped in my tracks. This week I'm mid-crossing on a transatlantic voyage from Southampton to New York, on a completely different cruise line than the one I've spent almost two years learning by heart, nineteen months of full-time cruise life, and I don't know anything anymore. Wrong lines, wrong hallways, a sold-out Titanic VR experience I didn't think to book in time, and one very expensive lesson about what's actually included in a mini bar. But this episode isn't really about any of that. It's about what happens the moment discomfort turns into curiosity instead, and why getting completely lost led me to a grandfather and grandson working on a puzzle together in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, three days before I land in New York to see my own family for the first time in a long while. Today we're arriving into Genoa, Italy, one of the great trading ports of the old world, ships setting out for centuries into water they hadn't mapped yet.
