Unexpected Highlights of Our Sitka Cruise Port Day

Despite struggling with back issues and constant rain, we made the most of our time hiking, visiting the Fortress of the Bear, bear sanctuary, the Sitka National Historic Park Totem Poles and Downtown Sitka. The Fortress of the Bear was a highlight of the trip that proved you can still have a memorable experience even when things do not go exactly as planned. We also spent time taking in the scenic views and exploring the cultural exhibits that define the region. We had 8 hours in Sitka, rain + bad backs, and paid ~$130 for a Turo at the port instead of a ship excursion - Whale Park, Herring Cove Trail to the falls, Fortress of the Bear, totems, and Russian dumplings downtown. Seeing the Alaskan wildlife up close gave us a new appreciation for the area, and we are glad we stuck with our plans to see Sitka Alaska for ourselves.
