What REALLY happens in the 8 hours between cruises? A cruise ship carrying thousands of passengers has to become completely empty — and then completely full again — in just a few hours. While one group of passengers is heading home and the next is arriving for embarkation day, an enormous behind-the-scenes cruise ship operation is taking place. Thousands of suitcases come off. Thousands more go on. Every cabin has to be reset, fresh food and supplies arrive, rubbish leaves the ship, maintenance crews race to finish repairs, and thousands of crew members work against the clock. And for a short period, something very strange happens: The cruise ship has ZERO passengers onboard. In this video, we reveal what really happens on a cruise ship turnaround day and the hidden work passengers almost never see. You’ll discover why the ship must reach a zero passenger count before new guests can board — and why even passengers staying onboard for a back-to-back cruise may still have to physically step off the ship before being allowed straight back on. Then there’s the luggage. A large cruise ship can move around 15,000 bags during turnaround. Suitcases from the previous cruise are sorted and unloaded while thousands of bags belonging to the next passengers are being brought aboard. Meanwhile, cabin stewards are facing one of the hardest shifts of their week. One crew member may need to completely reset around 20 staterooms in only a few hours — stripping beds, cleaning bathrooms, replacing towels, checking life jackets, preparing beds and getting each cabin ready for the next passengers. But cleaning cabins is only part of what happens behind the scenes. Cruise ship maintenance crews and outside contractors may be working on lifts, air conditioning systems, galley equipment and other repairs while the vessel is sitting in port. Fuel is loaded. Fresh food arrives. Waste collected throughout the previous cruise is removed. All of it has to happen before the ship sails again. There can also be an unexpected visitor onboard: a health inspector. Cruise ships can receive unannounced inspections covering kitchens, drinking water, pools, medical facilities, cabins and sanitation. We explain how cruise ship inspection scores work, where passengers can look them up for free, and what happens when a ship receives an unsatisfactory result. We also look at what happens when turnaround day goes wrong. If the previous cruise has suffered a norovirus or gastrointestinal outbreak, normal boarding can be delayed while the ship undergoes an intensive deep clean. Extra cleaning teams may be brought aboard and passengers can be left waiting at the terminal while thousands of surfaces are disinfected. For some cruise ship crew members, this is the day they finally go home after working onboard for months. At almost the same time, their replacement arrives with a suitcase and begins a new contract that may last until the following year. So while you're walking up the gangway excited for the start of your cruise, somebody else may be walking down it after spending eight months away from home. The next time you board a cruise ship, look around. What appears to be a perfectly prepared floating resort was, only hours earlier, a completely different place.
