St. Michael’s Cathedral in Sitka, Alaska was the first Russian Orthodox cathedral built in America. Its original building dates to 1844–1848 and was destroyed by fire in 1966. Townspeople rescued its sacred treasures, and the cathedral was reconstructed with its historic appearance preserved. Today it remains a place of worship.
