There's one stretch of this train ride where I'd tell you to stop scrolling your phone.
Not every part of this 8 hour train ride on the McKinley Explorer needs your full attention, and that's okay. The first stretch out of Anchorage is beautiful, but the moment worth being ready for comes later. That's when the train crosses Hurricane Gulch and climbs up to Broad Pass, over 2,300 feet up, the highest point on the whole Alaska Railroad. The view really opens up right there. So charge your phone before you board, but don't use it all up on the first hour of trees. Save it for that stretch. It's the part people remember and talk about after.
