In this episode, from the port of Trapani, we travel up Mount Erice to explore the ancient streets and remarkable history of this Sicilian hill town. We visit the Chiesa Matrice, dating to the early 14th century, and the 12th-century Castello di Venere (Castle of Venus), built by the Normans on the site of an ancient temple associated with Venus. Erice’s summit is also surrounded by remnants of ancient defensive walls dating back more than 2,500 years, reflecting the town’s Elymian, Punic, Roman, and Norman history. We also stop at Maria Grammatico’s famous pastry shop, where generations of Sicilian confectionery tradition live on through almond sweets, marzipan, and cannoli. Along the way, we take in sweeping views over Trapani and the western Sicilian coast while discovering why Erice remains one of Sicily’s most distinctive medieval destinations.
