Galápagos sea lions are some of the most charismatic animals in the islands, and they’re found almost nowhere else on Earth. In this video, I explore how they differ from true seals, how powerful they are on land and in the water, what they eat, and how their highly sensitive whiskers help them track prey. I also look at the dramatic size difference between males and females and how that connects to their competitive breeding system. I’ll also look at how females invest heavily in their young, with pups sometimes suckling for more than two years, and how dominant males compete for the best stretches of coastline. Some bachelor males will even climb steep cliffs simply to avoid the territories of larger breeding bulls. And underwater, young sea lions can be incredibly curious and playful, often approaching snorkelers, investigating fins and blowing bubbles into masks. I also explore one of the biggest changes I’ve seen in more than three decades in the Galápagos: some traditional colonies have declined while large numbers of sea lions now live right alongside people in urban areas. I share my own hypothesis about why busy harbours may provide a safer environment from sharks, before looking at the wider threats facing the species, including El Niño, reduced food availability, fishing interactions and pollution. ________________________________________________________________________________ Planning a trip to the Galápagos Islands? 🏝️ Paul McFarling is a Galápagos guide and tour organiser with over 30 years of experience helping travellers explore the islands, wildlife, landscapes, and natural history of this extraordinary destination.
