Getxo Bilbao Cruise Port: Skip The City For This Easy Port Day?
If you've already visited the Guggenheim and Bilbao's Old Town on a previous trip, what else can you do when your cruise ship docks in Getxo? On Day 3 of our Spanish Flair and Solar Eclipse cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas, we're keeping things local. Instead of heading back into Bilbao, we explore the area around the port, starting with the incredible Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most unusual bridges. We take the famous transporter gondola across the Nervión estuary to Portugalete, before heading back towards Getxo and taking the metro to Algorta. In Algorta, we explore the old fishing port, discover the historic Riberamune steps and San Nicolás Chapel, and stop for two very different local drinks: Kalimotxo, red wine mixed with Coca-Cola, and Txakoli, a local Basque white wine. It turns out you don't always need a big excursion to have a great cruise port day.
