Greetings fellow travelers join us for a quick look at Dawes Glacier. This is a massive, highly active tidewater glacier located in Southeast Alaska at the head of the 30-mile-long Endicott Arm fjord. Situated roughly 50 miles south of Juneau within the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness area of the Tongass National Forest, it is celebrated for its striking, deep-blue ice and intense, thunderous calving activity. The glacier measures roughly 15 to 20 miles in length. Its towering face stands over 300 feet above the waterline and plunges another 300 feet below the surface, stretching over a half-mile wide. The ice originates in the Stikine Icefield at an elevation of more than 5,200 feet.Movement: It flows forward toward the sea at an average rate of about 15 feet per day. The distinct, vivid blue color occurs because thousands of years of immense pressure have squeezed out internal air bubbles. The densest blue ice at the bottom is estimated to be 10,000 years old. Thanks for watching, leave us a comment and as always we will see you soon for the next tour. #dawesglacier #msccruises
