We came to New York expecting the skyscrapers, the yellow taxis and the madness of Times Square… but the New York we fell in love with was somewhere else entirely. 🇺🇸🗽 In Part 1 of our New York adventure, we're ditching the traditional tourist checklist and heading into the neighbourhoods where New Yorkers actually live, eat, drink and hang out. We cross the Brooklyn Bridge and spend the day exploring Brooklyn, wandering its beautiful brownstone streets, watching locals play basketball, joining a free community art project and meeting some incredibly friendly New Yorkers along the way. Then it's back across the river to explore SoHo, the East Village and West Village, walk the High Line, visit Domino Park and eat an absolutely ridiculous pastrami sandwich at the legendary Katz's Delicatessen. And in Washington Square Park, we stumble across one of our favourite New York characters — chess legend Marty Anderson — hustling hopeful challengers across the chessboard. Graham wisely decides that buying one of Marty's $5 bottles of water is considerably safer than challenging him to a game. 😂♟️ There are coffees, pizza, neighbourhood bars, locals, parks, bikes, plenty of food and quite a few moments where we simply stop and watch everyday New York happening around us. And perhaps that was our biggest surprise. Every American we met was incredibly friendly, kind and helpful. New York might have a reputation for being fast, loud and intimidating, but our experience couldn't have been further from that. Oh... and apparently New York is MUCH bigger than Graham expected. Jodie, naturally, knew this already. 😂 But our New York story isn't finished... Part 2 takes a very different turn. It's July 4th in New York City 🇺🇸🎆 and we'll experience one of the most emotional moments of our entire trip at the 9/11 Memorial Reflecting Pools, head to the top of One World Trade Center, and then sail into New York Harbor for an unforgettable Fourth of July fireworks cruise. And after experiencing both the everyday neighbourhoods and some of the city's most iconic and emotional places, we'll finally answer the question we've been asking since we arrived: Is New York City still the place where dreams come true? Part 2 coming next. ❤️ If you enjoyed exploring New York with us, subscribe and come along for the next chapter.
