We crossed the line
We crossed the line. 📍 [📌 Save this if a South Pacific cruise is on your radar] The international date line doesn’t look like much on a map. It’s just a slightly irregular vertical line through the Pacific Ocean. But cross it heading east and you get something genuinely strange: the same day, twice. 🌐 Here’s why it happens: Time zones wrap around the Earth from UTC-12 on the west side of the date line to UTC+14 on the east. When you cross east, the calendar rewinds 24 hours and you gain a full day. 🛳️ Samoa and American Samoa sit on opposite sides of that line, separated by about 100km of open Pacific. Our cruise sailed between them overnight. We went to sleep on Sunday. We woke up on Sunday. ☀️ Two sunsets. Same golden Pacific light. 🗓️ Same date. Different island. 🏪 Different island, same closed shops, because of course it was Sunday 😂 After 95 countries, we’re used to time zones feeling disorienting. This was different. Watching the clock reset while the ocean looked completely unchanged is one of those things you have to experience to understand why it stays with you.
