San Javier Mission Loretto Mexico Tour
A stunning journey from the Loreto cruise port deep into the Sierra de la Giganta mountains to visit one of the best-preserved secrets in Baja California Sur: Misión San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó. We set off from the cruise ship Zaandam on a gorgeous, sunny April morning. After tendering into the Loreto harbor, we made our way inland through dramatic winding canyons. Along the way, we explored a humble roadside chapel before arriving in the breathtaking San Javier mission valley oasis. Inside the village, we walked among massive, twisted olive trees originally planted by Jesuit missionaries in the early 1700s and admired the ingenious historic stone canal system that still keeps this desert valley green today. We took our time exploring the stunning volcanic rock architecture of the main mission, the historic cemetery, the peaceful blooming gardens, and the serene sanctuary inside. Before driving back to the coast, we even stopped by a local stand and picked up some of the freshest, most authentic olive oil we've ever tasted (sold in a simple plastic bottle, and it didn't last long at home!). ☀️ TRAVEL TIP FOR VISITORS: The travel guides we read beforehand warned us that it gets chilly up near the mountain mission, but during our trip in April, it was not cool at all—it was a hot 88 degrees! If you are planning this excursion yourself, definitely prepare to drink plenty of water before you go.
