Dover and Deal Port Stop British Isles Cruise | Travel and Cruise Tips Travel Planning Resources: The Port of Dover website The English Heritage.org website Brief history Dover's story starts before there was even a Channel. Stone Age people crossed what was then a land bridge from Europe to settle the River Dour valley. Because of its key location, invaders aimed for Dover first — Julius Caesar in 55 BC, William the Conqueror, Napoleon, and Hitler. What to see (* highlighted in this video) *1. The White Cliffs of Dover Towering white, chalk cliffs of Great Britain best viewed by ship. Walk the National Trust trails. On a clear day you see France. *2. Dover Castle The largest castle in England. One ticket covers 2,000 years: Roman lighthouse, Saxon church of St Mary in Castro, Henry II's Great Tower, and the Secret Wartime Tunnels. Allow half a day. 3. The Secret Wartime Tunnels Short on time? The medieval tunnels turned into WWII command center and underground hospital are not to be missed. 4. Dover Museum and the Bronze Age Boat In the Market Square. The museum houses a 3,500-year-old Bronze Age boat found in Dover 5. Roman Painted House Buried for 1,800 years, with beautiful painted plaster walls from around AD 200. 6. Western Heights & Grand Shaft Opposite the castle, a huge Napoleonic fortress system with forts, deep ditches, and a triple spiral staircase down to town. 7. Dover Western Docks & Seafront Promenade Rebuilt waterfront with marina, eat fish and chips, stroll to the Prince of Wales Pier, watching ferries. 8. Nearby easy add-ons: • St Margaret's Bay — tiny cove at the foot of the cliffs where Noël Coward lived. *• Deal and Walmer Castles — Henry VIII's perfect Tudor artillery forts, 15 minutes up the coast. • Canterbury — medieval cathedral city, 30 minutes by train. Tips: Wear good walking shoes — everything is up a hill. Check tide times if you plan to walk under the cliffs. Spring and early autumn are the best for light on the cliffs and smaller crowds.
