We sail from Cairns north to Lizard Island. Then return to Cairns to clear customs and begin our cruise around Melanesia. This video covers the second preparation cruise. On the way north we stopped at Michaelmas Cay on Michaelmas Reef where a huge number of Sooty Terns were nesting. We explored Lizard Island including some reef snorkelling and testing my Nikonos underwater camera. We walked and climbed up to Cook's Look, the mountain on Lizard Island that Captain James Cook climbed to check the surrounding sea. When he saw the amount of coral reefs he decided to leave the Australian coast and head to open ocean. This was after they had fixed a hole in the hull of the Endeavour punched by a lump of coral they ran into. They had managed to get the stricken ship into the river where Cooktown, the town named after him is, and beach the Endeavour to do repairs. Remember that all photos and movie content are digitised from 50 year old 35mm slide film and 8mm Super 8 movie film taken in 1976
