We Pay $800 a Year in Travel Card Fees. Is It Actually Worth It?
We pay $800 a year in annual fees for two travel credit cards. That sounds like a lot of money. So are the benefits actually worth what we’re paying? On one recent three-night trip, we put our Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card and Hilton Honors American Express Card to the test. We flew for almost nothing using miles, checked two bags each way for free, stayed at the hotel on points, used miles toward our rental car, got upgraded on the flight and at the hotel, and visited the Delta Sky Club both ways. In this video, we break down what we actually spent, what we saved, the travel upgrades that made the trip better, and whether these cards earn their place in our wallets. We also talk about other benefits, including TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credits, Hertz status, Resy credits, Uber benefits, and other card perks. And there’s one benefit we always use: the Delta companion certificate. Depending on how you use it, that benefit alone can potentially offset the annual fee. We are not telling you to run out and get a travel credit card. Credit cards only make sense when you use them responsibly. We’ve learned that lesson ourselves. If you’re carrying a balance and paying interest, those travel perks can get expensive fast. But if you travel frequently, a good travel card may be worth looking at.
