Cancun Airport News #shorts
Are there really fewer flights flying to Cancún in 2026? The numbers indicate that Cancún International Airport (CUN) has been experiencing a noticeable slowdown, particularly in international traffic—and travelers, travel agents, hotels and businesses throughout the Riviera Maya are paying attention. In this video, I discuss what’s happening at Cancún International Airport, why airlines have reduced some capacity, and what it could mean for your next Cancún vacation. One major factor is softer international demand. Airport operator ASUR reported that international passenger traffic at Cancún declined 15% in August 2026 compared with August 2025, while international traffic for January through August was down about 6.1% year over year. Airline capacity between the United States and Mexico has also shifted. Aviation-data company OAG reported substantial reductions in U.S.–Cancún capacity compared with the previous summer. Why is this happening? Higher vacation costs can influence demand. Travelers are comparing Cancún with destinations throughout the Caribbean, Mexico and the cruise industry. Hotel rates, airfare, ground transportation, food and excursions all factor into the total price of a Cancún vacation. Airlines also constantly adjust schedules based on demand and profitability. If planes aren’t filling at the fares airlines need, frequencies can be reduced or aircraft moved to stronger markets. Competition is another factor. Travelers have more choices than ever, including cruises, Punta Cana, Jamaica, Aruba and other Mexican destinations. The opening of Tulum International Airport has also created another gateway for travelers heading to the Riviera Maya. Does this mean Cancún is in trouble? Not necessarily. Cancún remains one of North America’s major leisure destinations, and airline schedules can change quickly depending on season and demand. Have you noticed Cancún getting more expensive?
