Panama Canal Cruise | New Locks, Old Locks, Gatun Lake & Panama City Excursion
Join us as we experience one of the most unique cruise days you can have — a partial Panama Canal transit from the Atlantic side into Gatun Lake, followed by an excursion through the original Panama Canal locks toward the Pacific side. In this video, we take you along as our cruise ship waits to enter the Panama Canal, transitions through the newer locks, and enters Gatun Lake. We explain the difference between the original Panama Canal locks and the newer expanded locks, including how they work, when they were built, and why the Panama Canal remains one of the most important engineering achievements in the world. After the ship’s partial transit, we join the Destination Highlight: Panama Canal Locks and Gaillard Cut Cruise excursion, operated by Aventura 2000. This long but fascinating day included a ferry transfer, bus ride, small boat cruise through the original canal locks, views of the bridges near the Pacific side, and a long return ride back toward Colón, Panama. We also share our honest thoughts about the road conditions, traffic, the long travel time involved, and what we saw in Colón, Panama. While we felt safe on the organized excursion, this is definitely a port where we would recommend staying with a planned tour or within the secure port shopping area rather than exploring independently. This was a very long day, but also one of the most interesting cruise experiences we have ever done. If you are considering a Panama Canal cruise, this video will help you understand the difference between a partial transit and full transit, large ships versus smaller ships, and what to expect on a Panama Canal cruise excursion.
