Royal Caribbean Group is buying a 50% stake in Sandals Resorts for approximately $3 BILLION, a transaction that values the famous Caribbean resort company at roughly $6 billion. And this is about much more than cruise ships. Royal Caribbean has increasingly positioned itself as a vacation company, expanding beyond traditional cruising with private destinations, beach clubs and other land-based experiences. Now, owning half of Sandals gives Royal Caribbean a major position in the Caribbean all-inclusive resort business. Sandals operates its famous adults-only, all-inclusive resorts throughout the Caribbean, while Beaches focuses on family vacations. Think about the possibilities. Could we eventually see Royal Caribbean cruise passengers offered Sandals pre- or post-cruise packages? Could loyalty programs eventually interact? Could Royal Caribbean market cruises and Sandals vacations to the same customers? Those possibilities are worth watching, but travelers should understand that they are not automatically part of the announced transaction. The financial markets also reacted to the news. Royal Caribbean shares fell more than 6% Tuesday as investors considered the price of the transaction and the risks of expanding further into land-based Caribbean resorts. There’s another major difference between resorts and cruise ships: when a hurricane threatens, a cruise ship can change course. A resort can’t move. The deal is expected to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. So what do YOU think? Is buying half of Sandals a smart expansion for Royal Caribbean?
