What REALLY happens when you miss your cruise ship? From frantic pier runners sprinting down the dock to passengers actually left behind by a cruise ship in a foreign country, this video reveals exactly what happens when you miss the all-aboard time — and the surprisingly simple mistakes that cause it. What happens when passengers miss their cruise ship? Does the captain wait? What happens to your passport and luggage? Who helps you once the ship is gone? Can you fly to the next port and rejoin the cruise? And who pays for the flights, hotels and transportation? We’re going behind the scenes of one of the biggest fears in cruising. You’ve probably seen viral cruise ship pier runners racing towards the gangway while hundreds of passengers cheer from the balconies. But what happens when those passengers really are too late? One of the biggest traps is something many cruisers don’t realise until it’s too late: ship time and local port time can be different. Your phone may automatically change to local time while the cruise ship remains on ship time — potentially leaving you an hour later than you think you are. And there’s another crucial difference every cruiser needs to understand: all-aboard time is NOT the same as the ship’s departure time. The gangway can already be coming up even though the cruise ship is still sitting right there at the pier. In this video, we reveal what really happens behind the scenes when a cruise passenger goes missing at a port. You’ll discover how the crew knows exactly which passengers are still ashore, why they may start calling emergency contacts, hospitals and local authorities, and why knowing where you are can sometimes make the difference between the captain waiting and the ship sailing without you. We also explain what happens to your belongings if you're left behind. Cruise ship security may enter your cabin and try to retrieve important items such as your passport and medication — but your luggage will usually continue sailing without you. Then there is the person most cruise passengers have never heard of until they desperately need them: the cruise port agent. If your ship sails without you, the port agent may be the person left behind on the dock who can contact the ship, help with your documents and explain how you might catch up with the cruise. But missing a cruise ship can become extremely expensive. Flights booked at the last minute, hotels, taxis, food, visas and transportation to another country can all become your responsibility. We also explain when travel insurance for a missed cruise departure may help — and why you should check your policy before you sail. You’ll also learn why booking a cruise line shore excursion can make an enormous difference. If an official cruise excursion runs late, the ship knows where you are and has a direct relationship with the tour operator. With an independent excursion, you may be responsible for getting yourself to the next port. And surprisingly, there are situations where you may reach the next port and the cruise line still cannot legally let you board because of U.S. passenger shipping laws. Finally, we look at the extraordinary real story of eight Norwegian Dawn passengers who missed the all-aboard time in São Tomé and Príncipe. Even though the ship was still visible, they were refused boarding, later tried to reach it by Coast Guard boat, and ultimately travelled through multiple countries trying to catch up with their cruise.
