The Soviet cruise ship fleet is a little-known part of the story of the Union but for sixty years the cruise industry within the USSR had grown to enormous size. It had begun with a small fleet of ageing steamships running short excursions - and it ended in some of the nicest-looking purpose-built cruise ships of the 70s and 80s. It wasn’t all smooth sailing and there were tragedies in there as well; but the Soviet cruise ships emerged as the underdog in a cut-throat industry dominated by Western ships and they left an indelible mark. From the purposeful Admiral Nakhimov to the gorgeous Poet Class; Ivan Franko, Aleksandr Pushkin, Taras Shevchenko, Shota Rustaveli and Mikhail Lermontov. There were highs and crushing lows - the latter of which culminated in the loss of Admiral Nakhimov and Mikhail Lermontov within months of each other.
