On Wednesday, February 23, 2011, around 50 World War II veterans came on board Cunard Line's magnificent flagship, Queen Mary 2, for a special Remembrance Service and lunch in tribute to Australia's Finest Generation. Their visit recalled an earlier Royal Rendezvous when Cunard's original Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, both converted troopships, met in Sydney on April 9, 1941. The veterans sailed to war on board the two Cunard liners. We are indebted to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, George Shirley, the 450 Squadron RAAF Association and Raymond Style for the fantastic footage and photos of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth in Sydney Harbour in their wartime 'grey ghost' livery.
