Planning to visit the Orkney Islands on a British Isles cruise? We recently spent a wonderful day in Orkney, and Allison is sharing what we learned — including what you can easily do on your own, what may be worth booking an excursion or private driver for, and some practical tips that can make your visit much easier. Our ship docked near Kirkwall, and one of the first things that impressed us was just how welcoming the local people were. Getting into Kirkwall was also very easy. A complimentary shuttle ran frequently between the cruise port and town, with the ride taking only about 5–10 minutes. The shuttle drops you near the tourist information area, making Kirkwall very easy to explore independently. We'll show you what it's like to walk around Kirkwall, including St. Magnus Cathedral, and talk about which sights you can comfortably visit on your own versus the places farther out on the islands where an excursion or private driver can really make a difference. Allison also shares some practical advice about visiting Orkney. There can be cobblestones, dirt, grass and uneven terrain, so a walking stick can be very helpful if you need a little extra stability. And definitely bring waterproof shoes! After carrying ours on cruise after cruise and rarely needing them, Orkney was one place where we were very glad we had them. Following Allison's tips, Gordon has put together about 10 minutes of our footage from the day so you can see for yourself what it's actually like to visit the Orkney Islands. Even if Orkney isn't currently on your travel list, we hope you'll come along and experience this beautiful part of Scotland with us! God bless you! Allison & Gordon Let's Go!
