Kristiansand Norway Cruise Port | How Much Can You See Without an Excursion?
Welcome to Kristiansand, Norway! 🇳🇴 We're Ed & Mai from Ed & Mai: WanderFree Retirees, and we're exploring another cruise port the way we usually prefer — on our own and on foot, without purchasing a cruise ship excursion. Kristiansand turned out to be an especially easy port to explore this way. We left the ship and simply started walking, eventually seeing much more of the city than we expected. Our walk took us past the striking Kilden Performing Arts Centre and through Fiskebrygga, Kristiansand's colorful Fish Wharf. From there we explored downtown Kristiansand, the central market area and Kristiansand Cathedral before walking through Posebyen, the city's historic wooden-house district. We also discovered that we walked right through Christiansholm Fortress, a waterfront fort dating to 1672! But we didn't stop there. We continued farther from downtown to Gimle Gård, the historic Gimle estate, and Kristiansand's Natural History Museum and Botanical Garden. It's a great example of why we don't automatically book excursions when visiting cruise ports. Sometimes you can simply walk off the ship and have a fantastic day exploring on your own. If you're visiting Kristiansand on a Norway cruise, come along and see what you can experience without an excursion. We're early retirees traveling the world and sharing what it's really like to cruise and travel extensively on a retirement budget.
