In this Athens cruise port guide we cover: • Best area to stay in Athens Greece: Plaka Athens, the oldest neighborhood at the base of the Acropolis of Athens — pedestrian streets, Acropolis views, and an easy walk to what to do in Athens • Airport to Plaka: no easy public transportation — about a 45–60 minute drive by taxi, Uber, or private transfer (we used Urban Wear) • Plaka hotel we used: the Regal Hotel — Acropolis views from the room; rooftop bar is not hotel-owned, so reserve dinner and expect a wait for drinks • What to do in Athens in a couple of days: go early (opens around 8am), buy Acropolis tickets online for timed entry, and see the Parthenon on the sacred hill • Museums: Acropolis Museum or the National Archaeological Museum (we preferred the National Archaeological Museum) • Plaka walk from the hotel: Holy Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation, Roman Forum, and Hadrian’s Library — easy walking distance • Greek food in Plaka: touristy rooftop dinner (Becky’s moussaka was outstanding) plus bakery pastries, chocolate croissant, and Greek coffee the next morning • Plaka to the Port of Piraeus: about 8 miles, about 20 minutes; Piraeus Port handled about 1.8 million passengers in 2025 (third in the Mediterranean behind Barcelona and Rome).
