Hidden inside the woods southwest of Chicago is Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, a small pioneer burial ground often called one of the most haunted cemeteries in Illinois—and sometimes one of the most haunted in America. To reach it, we followed an abandoned section of the old Midlothian Turnpike into the forest. Along the way, we explored the cemetery’s real history, its surviving gravestones, the vandalism that nearly erased it, and the legends that transformed it into a paranormal landmark. Stories connected to Bachelor’s Grove include the mysterious Madonna photographed among the graves, a farmhouse that disappears when approached, a phantom car traveling the abandoned road, unexplained lights, shadowy figures, and disturbing tales surrounding the nearby lagoon. But how much of the story is documented history, how much is folklore, and what does the cemetery actually feel like today? Join us for a daylight walk through Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery as we separate its known history from the haunted legends surrounding it.
