Join us for Episode 5 of our Marella Discovery 2 Highlights of the Med Cruise series, where we explore Livorno on a brilliant food and wine walking tour — packed with history, canals, culture, and plenty of delicious bites along the way. We start the morning with fresh air on the prom deck, before heading to our favourite breakfast spot onboard — The Glass House. It’s peaceful, relaxed, and the perfect way to ease into the day. Out on deck, the port was buzzing with activity, so after disembarking we took a moment to admire Marella Discovery 2 before heading through the terminal to find the shuttle bus. The transfer only takes around 15 minutes, making it a quick and easy ride into Livorno. Once we met our guide, our Livorno food and wine walking tour began. We wandered towards Little Venice and Fortezza Nuova, passing Greek and Armenian churches and learning about the city’s diverse communities. Little Venice was built by the Medici family between 1629 and 1645, and its canals were engineered using the same techniques as Venice itself. At Fortezza Nuova, we explored the star‑shaped fortification, watched the resident cats playing, and enjoyed views of the Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi and Republic Square. We even found an impressive old cannon hidden among the flowers. Continuing along the canals, we reached the Church of Saint Catherine, where we were lucky enough to step inside and admire the beautiful décor. Then it was time to try a traditional Livornese sandwich — the “Cinque e Cinque” (5 & 5), a chickpea pie served in a baguette. Inside the indoor market, we soaked up the sights and smells of fresh produce before sampling local wines paired with meats, cheeses, and a shared platter of fish — each with its own unique flavour. Our tour came to an end, but we absolutely loved it. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and full of fascinating stories — we’d definitely recommend this excursion. With the name of a local bar in hand, we set off on our own little adventure, walking off everything we’d just eaten and soaking up the atmosphere of Livorno. In the distance, we could see Discovery 2, making the walk back to the shuttle much easier. Back onboard, it was time to cool off at the Glass House pool. We love that the cabanas here are completely free — a rare treat compared to most cruise lines. After relaxing, we grabbed a drink from the pool bar and enjoyed sailaway at 7:30pm, waving goodbye to Livorno as we headed towards San Remo. Before dinner, we couldn’t resist stepping out onto the prom deck to enjoy a stunning sunset. Keeping the Italian theme going, Gavin chose Gallery 47 for dinner — Discovery 2’s Italian dining section within the main dining room.
