I Visited Iceland’s Famous Game of Thrones Mountain 🇮🇸

Long before it became famous as Game of Thrones’ Arrowhead Mountain, Kirkjufell was already one of Iceland’s most recognizable natural landmarks. Standing above the fishing village of Grundarfjörður on Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Kirkjufell has become one of the country’s most iconic landmarks—and one of its most photographed. But seeing it in person is something else entirely. Its distinctive shape rises dramatically from the coastline, creating a landscape that feels almost unreal. It’s easy to understand why filmmakers chose it as a backdrop for one of television’s most famous fantasy worlds. While sailing aboard Aurora Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle during the ACTA Immersive Expedition Cruise in Iceland, I had the opportunity to visit this remarkable corner of the country and see firsthand why travellers from around the world make the journey.
