Sailing Dreamtime in the Whitsundays - October 1974
We picked up our friend Anne in Mackay, North Queensland, and she accompanied us for two weeks during our exploration of the Whitsunday Islands. Finally we sailed on to Townsville where we were to work for 18 months to replenish the funds ready for our next adventure. In 1974 the yachting scene in the Whitsundays was very basic. The big expansion into bareboat chartering was still some years away. At that time the regulations from what is now called Maritime Safety Queensland excluded the bareboat charter concept. However, there was a slowly increasing number of young people with home built boats or cheap older boats starting to explore the cruising life on the Coral Coast. At that time , apart from ferries taking customers to resort islands there were only a couple of larger sailing boats taking out paying passengers. So it was rare to encounter another yacht in the many excellent anchorages around the Whitsundays.
